Description
NZ Postal History, 1887 Soldier's concession rate inward cover to NZ "Australian colonies" ex India from active serviceman William P Underwood, bearing 9p (SG 77) & labelled "Via Pont de Galle and Melbourne" in red. Countersigned by "Commanding Officer" on the side with Underwood's rank & regimental attachment along the top. Indian & NZ (Oamaru & RTPO) cds on reverse. Aged cover with tatty edging. Remarkably clear 4 page letter details his situation & states "Mr Gladstone should be hanged". Also several pages of research notes.
